    Color psychology is a Science

Color psychology really is a science and an important one at that. It can help you choose paint colors that create the right mood in a room, affecting not just your own feelings, but those of everyone who enters. Paint color is so powerful, in fact, that it can influence not just our state of mind, but our psychology as well.
In support of that point, history tells us that the ancient Egyptians, as well as the Native Americans, used color to heal. If so, it’s likely that they favored blues and greens, colors that have an emotional association with peace, calm, harmony, and tranquility.
Blue, which often ranks at the top of surveys exploring “favorite” colors, can actually slow the pulse rate, lower body temperature, and reduce appetite. As far as paint is concerned, the implications are obvious: blue is a terrific color choice for bedrooms, less so for dining rooms.
Green, also one of the most popular colors, is a little more versatile. While it, too, has a soothing, calming effect (hence, it’s predominance in hospitals), it also is the color of nature. As such, it represents renewal, youth, and vigor. Bottom line: Because it is calming, green paint is a good color choice for bedrooms, and because it is the color of so many vegetables and other foods, it can work in dining rooms, too.
There’s no equivocation with Red. It bespeaks energy and excitement, actually raising the blood pressure and making the heart beat a little faster. Because it is aligned with desire and passion, it’s a perfect paint color for dining rooms and adult bedrooms, but wrong for children’s rooms. Yet, ironically, pink – a very light tint of red – is one of the most calming colors, and is a fine choice for a baby’s room.
Yellow is a great interior paint color. Like sunshine, it imparts happiness, hope, and optimism. Studies have shown that the brain actually releases more serotonin when the eye takes in yellow – creating positive psychological vibes. Yellow can even stir our creative juices. What better color to use in a master bath or dinette to get your day off on the right foot?
Orange is a happy color, too. More attention-getting than yellow, orange has an energy and warmth about it. But it pays to be careful with orange. Muddy shades are useful in many parts of the home, but vivid tones may appear raw and flamboyant. Orange is clearly not the color of calm, so it’s best to bypass it when painting a bedroom or any other area where you want to relax.
Purple is a tricky paint color wherever it’s used, but it’s the overwhelming favorite of adolescent girls. Reserve use of this paint color for your daughter’s room to create a win-win situation: Odds are, she’ll love it, and you can take comfort in purple’s proven ability to stimulate brain activity.
No discussion of paint color would be complete without mentioning the “non-colors”, black (the absence of light, and thus, color) and white (the confluence of all the colors in the spectrum).
Black is a great accent color indoors or out, imparting elegance, formality, and sophistication to a paint color scheme. But don’t get carried away with it. Too much black can be morose and depressing.

White, on the other hand, conveys peace, simplicity, spaciousness, and cleanliness. It can provide a crisp finish to almost any paint job by adding sharp contrast to the wall color. Used throughout a room on walls and woodwork, it can give the illusion that the space is bigger than its physical dimensions.
Color psychology is an important consideration when selecting an interior paint scheme, but it’s only part of the puzzle. Even subtle nuances of tint or shade can alter the impact on our psyche. Then there’s the elephant in the room, so to speak: our personal color preference.
No one will spend more time in your home than you will, so it’s important to please yourself when painting. Choose colors that you love and you won’t go wrong.

A coat of paint not only creates an attractive appearance for years to come, it also protects exterior surfaces from moisture, fading and temperature changes

A coat of paint not only creates an attractive appearance for years to come, it also protects exterior surfaces from moisture, fading and temperature changes. A high-quality paint will provide better protection, complete coverage, easier application and longer-lasting results. When it comes to buying paint, you have lots of choices, some determined by your application and others that are based solely on your preference. Before you learn about all of the options available to you, use the following questions to focus in on the needs of your project:
    ·         What types of exterior surfaces do you plan to paint?
    ·         Are they chalky or layered with previous coats of oil paint?
    ·         Are you painting bare wood, metal or concrete?
    ·         Does the surface require frequent cleaning or have imperfections?
    Quality, Types, Tips and Primer

High-quality paint is important for any project, but it’s especially important for exterior projects, which are subjected to harsh weather conditions day in and day out. Take some time to consider long-term benefits of better paints in addition to their initial cost. A good paint will require fewer coats and last longer, saving you money and time in the long run.

Water-Based vs. Oil-Based: In general, water-based paints are preferred for most exterior applications, but oil-based paints may perform better under certain conditions. Water-based paints are flexible enough to expand and contract with the siding on a house, they’re breathable, so they won’t trap moisture and crack or peel, and they dry significantly faster. Oil paints usually take between 8 and 24 hours to dry, while water-based paints dry in just 1 to 6 hours. Oil-based paints offer better adhesion and stain blocking, so they’re better for chalky surfaces, stained surfaces, bleeding woods (tannin or sap) and metals that rust.
    ·         Water-based paint can be applied over oil-based paint, but oil-based paint shouldn't be applied over water-based
    ·         On surfaces with four or more coats of oil paint, stick with oil, since a water-based paint may cause the oil paint to pull away and crack
    ·         Latex paints with an all-acrylic binder hold up to weather better than latex paints with a vinyl-acrylic binder

    Paint Base
    Description
    Major Advantages
    Oil-based (alkyd)
Consist of a pigment and resin in a solvent thinner. When thinners evaporate, the resins form a hard coating, leaving behind the pigment (which provides the color).
    ·         Better surface penetration
    ·         Better adhesion
    ·         Wearability
    ·         Better flow and leveling
    ·         Dries to a smoother finish with fewer brush/roller marks
    Water-based (acrylic; latex)
Consist of a pigment and binder with water used as carrier.
    ·         Better gloss and color retention
    ·         Breathable (won’t trap moisture)
    ·         Quicker drying
    ·         Less odor
    ·         Nonflammable
    ·         Soap and water cleanup
    ·         Low VOCs (Volatile Organic Chemicals)

Primer: Bare wood and some other bare surfaces need to be primed before you paint them. Like paints, primers come in oil- and water-based varieties. Oil-based primers are suitable for use with oil- or water-based paints, so you could prime a chalky surface with oil-based primer for better adhesion and still take advantage of the benefits of latex paint. Water-based primer is not recommended for use under oil-based paint.
    ·         Water-based primers are recommended for most applications, but oil-based primers are preferable for stained wood, bleeding wood (sap or tannin) and metals that rust
    ·         Oil-based primers can be used with any paint, but water-based primer should only be used with water-based paint

    ·         There are specific primers for wood, concrete and certain metals, such as galvanized steel, iron and aluminum
Surface Preparation: Even the best paints won’t adhere well or produce good results if you don’t prepare the surface correctly. If the surface has been painted, check for peeling paint and scrape it off prior to applying a new coat. Whether or not the surface has been painted previously, it needs to be clean. If unpainted wood is gray or weathered, it should be sanded.
    ·         Clean, scrape and fill holes in the surface prior to paint application
    ·         Sleek surfaces may require light sanding to improve adhesion with primer or paint
    ·         Prime all bare wood, including bare spots and nails on previously painted surfaces
Weather: Just like proper surface preparation, applying paint in the right weather can make or break a project. In temperatures colder than 50˚F most paint won’t dry, but cold-weather paints are available for cooler climates. In direct sunlight paint may dry too fast, causing lap marks. Wind can also cause paint to dry too quickly, in addition to blowing dirt onto the surface.
    ·         Direct sun and wind can cause paint to dry too fast, especially fast-drying latex paints
    ·         Cold temperatures, rain and humidity can prevent paint from drying properly
    ·         Check the label for recommendations on temperature ranges before starting
    Features

Flat/Matte Finish: A flat finish hides imperfections better than a glossier finish but doesn’t clean as well. Flat finishes are generally used for siding.

Glossy Finish: Glossier paints create a hard, shiny, durable finish that’s easy to clean. Glossy paints bring out details, so they’re usually preferred for trim and doors. They also accentuate imperfections, so they’re not well suited for siding or walls.

Satin Finish: A satin finish has a slight gloss, so it’s more cleanable than flat paint yet still hides imperfections well.

    What i s Decorative Paintings

Decorative painting is a broad category that encompasses numerous painting techniques and mediums applied to a variety of surfaces. Contemporary decorative painting includes tole painting, folk art, and faux finishing.
Originally, tole painting referred to decorative painting specifically on tin. Tole is a French word meaning lacquered or enameled metal ware. The original tole painting medium was paint and common elements included fruit, flowers, and leaves. Traditional folk art originated with peasants and the style incorporated the use of natural-bristle round brushes, primary colors, and a great deal of stroke work, such as the comma stroke, C-stroke, and S-stroke. The style of traditional folk art varies according to the culture that it represents.
Contemporary decorative painting is applied to many surfaces, including plastic, wood, glass, fabric, and fiber board. Other possible surfaces are tiles, porcelain, ceramics, and pottery. Frequently, acrylic paint is the medium used for decorative painting because it dries faster than oil and because it's water based, and therefore easier to clean up.
Decorative painters use many specialty brushes, along with extenders, glazes, and gels, to create special effects. Contemporary decorative painting does not involve as much stroke work as traditional folk art. Common subjects include flowers, animals, fruits, birds, people, and scenery. Decorative painting is relatively easy to learn, and therefore quite popular.
In the 18th century, artists taught apprentices a method of one-stroke painting to decorate pottery or furniture. In this method, the brushes were loaded with multiple colors of paint so that the highlight, body color, and shadow were applied simultaneously. This method provides depth to the element, but is quicker than applying each layer individual. One-stroke is still a popular method of decorative painting.
Several methods of decorative painting are common in home decor. Faux finishing simulates stone, leather, marble, wood grain, and other finishes. Various faux finishing techniques include antiquing, crackling, smoking, sponging, and wood graining. Tromped L’Oreal is a decorative painting technique that creates the appearance of reality. Stenciling, in which paint is applied through a cut-out image, is commonly used to decorate walls or furniture.
Other methods of decorative painting used on walls or furniture include ragging, stippling, and pickling. Ragging creates texture as a crumbled piece of cloth is used to apply or remove small amounts of wet paint. In stippling, a stiff brush is used to apply paint over another color to create a blended look. Pickling, also known as a wash, gives wood a white or washed out appearance.

    Bed Room Decoration

Bedroom is a place to relax, to share a few quiet moments, unwind and..., to sleep away the weariness of a long, hard day. The bedroom design requires more attention as this reflects its user's lifestyle, his practical needs, aesthetic preferences and his dreams. A few tips to make your bedroom better:
Firstly analyze the space available and see what could be incorporated in the given space.
The way a room is decorated has a major effect on how spacious it looks. The colors for walls and ceilings, the choice of flooring, the treatment of windows and design of the lighting system are all important aspects of decor. Also, there are a few other aspects specific to bedroom decor such as bedspreads, quilts and cushions which must be given due consideration.
The bed should be comfortable and should have space underneath for easy cleaning. The colors can be soft which blend with the room, to give it a harmonious and spacious look.
Lighting can do wonders for your bedroom. It lends meaning, expression and depth to your room. Bedroom lighting should have a special treatment; the tone of the light should be warm and cozy, to achieve this, apart from the ceiling light and the lamps on the night table.
Ventilation is another important aspect. A well ventilated room is not only bright and cheerful; it is also good for your physical and mental well being. The television should ideally be in your bedroom, along with your music system. Just make sure your eyes are level with the TV screen to avoid straining your eye muscles.
Windows let in light and are usually a prominent focal point of the room. Decorative window treatments can lend style to rooms. Good curtains will give life to any room. Whites and creams adapt to both classic and modern styles and are found in fabrics made of cotton, polyester, wool and embroidered linen.
For all the time spent and the intimacy it demands, a bedroom takes very careful and detailed planning. Not because it is the most personal room in a house but because it is a room WHERE YOU DREAM.

    Decorate Your Living Room

    Living Room
The living room makes the first impression of your house. Hence, the living area should be well decorated, well laid out and inviting to guests and family members. It should project a homely, comfortable yet elegant image. With a combination of imagination, good taste, statues and lamps, any living area can be transformed into one that radiates elegance and coziness at the same time.
There are several ways you can decorate your living area to create an inviting place and cause a lasting impression to your guests:
    Arranging Furniture
When you start arranging your furniture in the living room, consider how the space will be used. Will the arrangement of your furniture allow free movement and flow? Does it give an uncluttered look? Instead of placing large sofas directly against the wall, why not place it a foot or so away from the wall and put a lamp or plant behind it instead?
Your lifestyle or taste determines what the focal point of your living area is. If you have a fireplace, you can rearrange your furniture around it. Or if you have a piano, and this is the focal point of your living area, your furniture could be set around it.
Choose colors to set the mood...
Colors can set the mood of your living room they can be either inviting or irritating. Colors have psychological effects on people and their moods. If you want your living area to be warm and inviting, use shades of Gold as it is one of the warmest and most relaxing colors. Whatever color you pick for the color of your walls, make your carpets and furniture coordinated.
Small furniture can be positioned in the room to create a "lived-in" aura for your living area. This can be a small bench, or a low sofa table. Place magazines, journals and newspapers under the table. Placing flower vases, baskets and small plants on your table also creates beauty and livens up the room.

Unique Lamps... Can add to the decor
Place Lamps in a corner or a tabletop and they can highlight your living area. Second to color, light creates moods and sets the tone of your living area. Unique lamps, created from polished minerals and stones, can emit light after exposure to daylight or the light from normal light bulbs. When the chemicals in minerals or rocks react to light, this reaction causes the minerals or rocks to glow. The visible light emitted is sometimes very colorful and it is often very different from the normal color of the mineral.
Decorating your home, particularly your living area, allows you to combine creativity, elegance and good taste. Make good use of space, accessories and furniture available to you so that you can create a living area that is inviting, relaxing, homely and elegant living room.
